A relay of attention. A shared, unhurried architecture of pursuit, leapfrogging across the plain one vantage point at a time.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt was on one of these mounds that I made this photograph. His mouth was barely open, not a sound, just the faintest parting, the way a predator breathes when it has found something worth measuring. The Mara stretched behind him into pale nothing, the grass dissolved into grey, the whole world reduced to the geometry of his focus.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eCheetah coalitions of brothers are among the most quietly formidable arrangements in nature. Alone, a cheetah is fast but fragile. Outcompeted, outmuscled, perpetually on the margins. Together, these three were something else entirely. They had not yet made their kill. Some of the most extraordinary things happen in the in-between while you are waiting for something else, while the light is doing nothing in particular, while the plain sits in its own quiet company.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style=\"text-align: left;\"\u003eWe had been sitting with this giraffe for some time, watching her move through the morning at her own unhurried pace, when I noticed the oxpecker. He had been there all along, tucked just below the ridge of her mane, working his way methodically through her coat with the focused air of someone who has somewhere to be and all the time in the world to get there. The relationship between oxpecker and host is one of Africa's oldest arrangements. The bird takes its meals in ticks and parasites, the giraffe receives what amounts to a traveling companion and a small, diligent custodian. By the time you find them, you have been humbled entirely. And that, perhaps, is exactly the point.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style=\"text-align: left;\"\u003eThe Izuba family is newly formed, still finding its shape around a single silverback and a sprawl of young babies. We had settled into the quiet work of watching them when she emerged from the undergrowth without ceremony. A young female who seemed to have decided, entirely on her own terms, that we deserved a proper introduction. She rolled across the ground toward us with an almost theatrical looseness, limbs going wherever they pleased, before arriving at her final position: flat on her back in the greenery, one hand loosely holding a reed she was chewing with the unhurried satisfaction of someone who has nowhere to be and no interest in pretending otherwise.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"MsoNormal\" align=\"center\" style=\"text-align: left;\"\u003eShe did not look at us. She was simply waiting, with a patience so complete it had become indistinguishable from stillness itself. In the highlands of Rwanda, mountain gorillas will often pause their feeding in heavy rain, hunkering down into the vegetation until it passes. The forest asks nothing of them in these moments. And so they simply remain.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\" class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003eWhat I was not prepared for was the gaze.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp style=\"text-align: left;\" align=\"center\" class=\"MsoNormal\"\u003eShe looked at me the way you are looked at when someone has decided you are not a threat but has not yet decided what you are. Not curiosity, exactly. Not indifference.
