📍Lower Zambezi National Park, Zambia

The Zambezi in the early dry season carries a particular stillness at dawn. The water is low and flat, holding the light like a mirror that has not quite decided what to reflect. The far bank dissolves into mist, and the trees behind it dissolve further, until the world is reduced to a few bands of color: grey water, amber grass, the soft blue-purple of everything that has not yet been found by the sun.

She has been in this river her whole life. So have her mother and her mother's mother.

The Zambezi's hippo pods are among the densest remaining anywhere, and the territorial boundaries between them are old and seriously maintained. A threat yawn is not aggression exactly. It is information. The opening of a mouth that can span four feet and carry teeth the length of a forearm is a statement of fact about the order of things, delivered into the evening air, whether anyone receives it or not.

The light does not care what she is saying. It just keeps doing what it does, turning everything the same soft rose, making the whole scene look like something remembered rather than witnessed.

The river was hers before we arrived. It will be hers long after.

About the Photographer

Christina Trester

Christina Trester discovered photography long before she understood its power. A quiet obsession that began at thirteen, it would eventually reshape the entire course of her life.

She has photographed all seven continents, into the mountains of Rwanda and the dust of the Lower Zambezi, through the early mornings of Ranthambore and the golden hours of the Serengeti. Her lens seeks not merely to document the natural world, but to reveal something of its interior life: the weight of a gaze, the geometry of a creature in motion, the silence that precedes something extraordinary. The moment the light does something in a forest that no description can quite hold.

Travel has always been inseparable from her work. The places that produced these images are not backdrops; they are the whole point, and sharing them with others is one of the great pleasures of this life. Christina leads small group expeditions and curates bespoke luxury travel experiences for those who want to see the world not as tourists passing through, but as people genuinely entering it.

She is based in Dallas, TX, and is perpetually in motion, following the light wherever it leads.
